CALCITE, SIDERITE, QUARTZ and PYRRHOTITE - Herja Mine, Baia Mare, Maramures, Romania
A remarkable testimony to the mineralogical richness of the hydrothermal veins of the famous Herja mine in Baia, Romania. This large cabinet specimen features tri-mineral paragenesis and striking relief. On a dense mat of intensely shimmering gray-white microcrystalline quartz, large crystals of cream rhombohedral calcite have developed. The entire room is beautifully decorated with a multitude of small globular rosettes of siderite in a bright orange color. On one of its flanks stands out a crystallized cluster of golden metallic pyrrhotite, offering a perfect contrast of textures and hues. An imposing piece, very aesthetic and highly representative of this historic site in Eastern Europe now permanently closed.
