HEMATITE - Le Haycot, Brezouard massif, Sainte-Marie-Aux-Mines, Haut-Rhin, France
This specimen showcases crystallized hematite from the mythical site of Le Haycot, within the Brézouard massif in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. The piece is notable for its main face, entirely covered with a tight tangle of deep jet-black lamellar crystals, forming magnificent ridged reliefs. Each blade features a specular metallic sheen of extreme brilliance, creating powerful shimmering reflections under the light. This carpet of sulfides rests on a solid rocky gangue, whose flanks reveal a crust of microcrystalline hematoid quartz with red and brick tones, the inescapable geological signature of this highly reputed locality. A major piece of cabinet, very graphic and historical, coming from an area that is now completely inaccessible.
